Q: What is the Great Streets Challenge Grant?
A: The Great Streets Challenge is a program of Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti’s Great Streets Initiative that grants community groups up to $28,000 in funding for outreach, technical support from an urban planning consultant and if selected as a finalist, approximately $500,000 in infrastructure investments to begin to transform a neighborhood corridor into a safer and more vibrant public space.
Q: Who is eligible to apply for the Great Streets Challenge Grant?
A: Eligible applicants include:
Nonprofit or community-based organizations with 501(c)(3) status
Schools and universities
Faith centers and institutions with 501(c)(3) status
Business Improvement Districts (BIDs) or businesses registered in the City of Los Angeles
Chambers of Commerce
Neighborhood Councils are encouraged to partner with eligible applicants listed above, but cannot serve as the lead applicant.
Q: Are there specific examples of projects that the Challenge Grant will fund?
A: We are looking for projects that fundamentally re-imagine the street as a vibrant public place. We are not looking for specific proposals but a reflection on the specific challenges and opportunities in your proposed project area. Q: How will the Challenge Grant recipients be selected?
A: Applications will be evaluated by a committee using following criteria:

Q: What is the expected of Challenge Grant recipients?
A: Challenge Grant recipients will have approximately six months to work with a consultant to complete outreach. Recipients will then present their design concept to a committee, which will select four finalists to receive approximately $500,000 in infrastructure investments from the City. These finalists will conduct additional outreach, finalize their design and coordinate with the City until the infrastructure improvements are implemented in 2020.
Q: Can a proposal be made for any street in the City of Los Angeles?
A: Yes, however, there are few exceptions. See the 2019 Community Partners Application Guide at for more information.
